Mission of Daphne Elementary School It is the mission of Daphne Elementary School to create lifelong learners who value the qualities of our unique student body, and who achieve both academically and socially in a safe and secure environment. Philosophy The Faculty of Daphne Elementary believes the public schools should prepare students to participate effectively as productive citizens in our democratic society. We believe that an understanding of the lessons of the past, as they affect the present, will enable students to become flexible, open-minded individuals who can adapt successfully to changing society. We believe that a student with a sense of his own self worth will not only learn better, but will also be more likely to set and to accomplish worthwhile goals. We believe that students have differing learning styles and abilities and need a variety of learning activities. We believe that good communication and mathematical skills are essential to leading full productive lives as contributing members of society. We also believe that in addition to the mastery of basic academic skills, students need to develop positive attitudes toward life-long learning. We recognize that the school cannot function effectively in accomplishing our goals without the support of parents and community.

Daphne Elementary was built in 1939, when the Daphne Normal State School closed in 1939. The Woodsmen of the World Hall on Sixth Street in Daphne was used as a temporary school while DES was being built. Upon opening DES taught students in grades first through eighth. The school consisted of ten classrooms, a science room, library, cafeteria, and auditorium. The library was considered one of the best in the county and the cafeteria was state of the art. Mr. A.R. McVay was Principal leading the school until 1963. Since first opening its doors to students in 1939, DES has, like the community it serves continued to grow and change. We are excited about the major rennovations and construction at our school. Click here to learn more about the city of Daphne.
